Mathematics
Fractions Divided By Fractions

In this lesson, students explore what they already know about division and apply it to dividing fractions by fractions. They will model, compute, and perform division of simple, non-complex fractions and apply these procedures to solving problems. In understanding the concept of dividing fractions by fractions, we first explore what is being asked when we are asked to divide. This concept is then written out and drawn to aid in academic vocabulary and as a way to help students visually understand what is happening.

CCSS addressed:

6.NS.A Apply and extend previous understandings of mulitplication and division to divide fractions by fractions.

6.NS.A.1 Interpret and compute quotients of fractions, and solve word problems involving division fractions by fractions, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem.

Describing Characters

Describing characters will help students to understand why a character acts and thinks the way they do. I did this lesson with my first grade students where they first learned how to describe their teacher and themselves; they then applied this skill to describing characters from the stories:

•Koala Lou by Mem Fox

• My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother by Patricia Polacco

• Hide and Seek with Zog by Maribeth Boelts

They also referred to the text for evidence of their descriptions.

CCSS addressed:

RL.1.3 Describe characters using key details.

RL.1.7 Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters.

Effective Strategies for Autistic & ADHD Students

This is a video I put together for a group research project in my Master's Program. The research done was to find the most effective strategies to best include students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in a mainstream classroom. My group & I conducted the research and I put together this quick video that briefly introduces ASD and ADHD as well as mentions a few effective strategies that can be implemented in the classroom.

People & Culture: Bali, Indonesia

-Art

This is a lesson plan I, along with a group of Liberal Studies majors, put together for Music Literature. This lesson plan gives detailed instruction, information, and lists other resources for presenting the Balinese culture to students. This lesson should be done over the course of several days. In addition to the lesson, I also created a "passport" that can be used to assess the students' learning and that each student can save as a keepsake of their "trip to Bali."

This is a lesson plan I created and have adapted in several different ways to fit the curricula of the grade and course. This is a fun and engaging class activity with a little friendly competition to help practice math facts.

  • Music-Math Baseball - This version brings musical notation into the classroom. The students need to recognize the notations in order to find its sum or difference before their opponent.
  • Math Facts Baseball - This version provides a fun and challenging way to practice all math facts. It can be easily adapted to work with addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division facts by simply creating the appropriate flash cards.
